Conference Opening of Space. Locating of Public Art.
A temporary conference zone will be provided by "Kuechenmonument" realized by raumlabor_berlin
and plastique fantastique. Semi transparent thin walls seperate what is outside from what is inside,
the enclosed and open space. They play with the very idea of a boundary which through its ephemeral
character separetes and welcomes, hides and explores at the same time.
Conference on architectural, social, political and cultural dimensions
of space recognized as public, its local characteristics and art living in it.
Warsaw, 8-9th Oct. 2007
This conference takes place at the time of a noticeable increase of the interest in art within spaces considered as public in Poland and in other Central and Eastern European countries. However with no effort of questioning the very concept of public space. the conference will be focused on three crucial questions: what does "public space" exactly mean?; how can be this space positioned geographically, culturally, politically and socially in the context of both Western and Central-Eastern Europe?; and finally, what is the character and the role of art within so problematised "public space"?
This platform will function as a utopian laboratory aimed at studying the
possibilities of smuggling emancipatory practices and announcements into
diverse glocal contexts.
