“Há pouco mais de um mês fui contactado pela Fundação Filos e pela APDES, que me convidaram para pensar num modo de apresentar projectos de equipamentos sociais em falta na Cidade do Porto. Preparava-se um evento ainda sem local escolhido nem programa definido, mas com uma data muito precisa: o Dia Internacional para a Erradicação da Pobreza. A intenção seria lançar ideias que pudessem agitar a consciência colectiva na busca de parceiros interessados em concretizá-las.

Numa primeira fase tratámos de definir os programas a desenvolver. Interessava trabalhar com grupos excluídos, como os idosos sós e pobres e os toxicodependentes. Pensámos no tipo de tipologias que poderiam ser criadas para estes grupos habitarem a cidade com a mesma dignidade que qualquer outro cidadão. A esta preocupação conciliou-se a constatação da presença de inúmeros imóveis devolutos em toda a cidade e a existência de zonas problemáticas sobretudo na parte Oriental. Definiu-se o ‘habitar’ como o tema central de uma nova geração de respostas socias.

Foram convidados 3 grupos da geração emergente de arquitectos, interessados e motivados para participar no debate das problemáticas urbanas e sociais, através da realização de propostas que pudessem ser adaptadas a contextos distintos, numa fase posterior. As equipas tiveram a oportunidade de ouvir e conversar sobre os problemas sociais e espaciais dos grupos em questão, através de visitas de estudo a algumas instituições - Centro de Acolhimento Temporário ‘Casa da Vila Nova’, ‘Albergues Nocturnos do Porto’ e ‘Braga Habit’. Nestas visitas ouvimos a voz de técnicos, responsáveis e também de beneficiários - o 3º incluído era tema do workshop - aos quais agradecemos a disponibilidade, o apoio e a simpatia.

Os trabalhos foram desenvolvidos com enorme empenho por parte das equipas e dos organizadores, sem horários definidos, à noite, ao fim-de-semana, em diferentes locais da cidade como cafés, restaurantes, esplanadas, galerias, casas e ateliers. Agradeço em nome pessoal e em nome da equipa ao Padre Maia, à Ana Sofia Viana e ao António Caspurro da Fundação Filos, e ao staff da APDES, nomeadamente a Alina Santos e o José Queiroz, com quem criei amizade que espero que perdure. INTERNATIONAL FORUM ON THE RELEVANCE OF THE LOCAL FOR CONTEMPORARY THOUGHT AND ART / ENCONTRO INTERNACIONAL SOBRE A IMPORTÂNCIA DO LOCAL NO PENSAMENTO E NA ARTE CONTEMPORÂNEOS


RELATIONAL SPACES: THE NEW EXPANDED FIELD FOR ART AND THOUGHT

The current concern with extending the debate on site and identity has proved to be supported by something that could be called relational practices. Many artists investigate processes of interchange (based or not on commercial interchange) as an ends to their artistic production, more than they invest solely in an object oriented practice. Conversations and, in general, any kind of social currency are considered to be relevant artistic methodologies, as well as engaging others in the artistic experience. But these processes have not necessarily been fully evaluated in terms of their aesthetics repercussions, neither have their social implications have been entirely demystified.It is therefore necessary to instigate a debate on this territory, attempting, on the one hand, to unveil the pitfalls of excessive welldoing expectations put on socially engaging art practices, at the same time that, on the other hand, the scope of the so called “relational aesthetics” and its importance for artists today needs to be investigated.The coming event proposes a different format for a conference by creating separate sets of interchange and discussion that later come together in the forum.

The line up of speakers comprises some of most interesting and thought-provoking voices at the moment: Álvaro Domingues, Carla Cruz, Carlos Bloss, Cristiana Rocha, Dolores Wilber, Francesca Ferguson, Future Reflections: Catherine Maffioletti, Katrine Hjelde, Marsha Bradfield, Heitor Alvelos, Igor Dobricic, Isabel Sabino, Lorenzo Benedetti, Nuno Grande, Sara Matos, Stephen Wright.

The structure of the event will thus consider two different types of moments: a line up of 30 minutes presentations on the 19th and the morning of the 20th from the invited and submitting speakers, both followed by a forum with the audience; and four working groups in the afternoon of the 20th chaired by a pair of speakers and invited participants. The working groups will share their findings and experience in a final discussion at the end of the day. It is intended to create a space of debate and brainstorming around the issues involved, so that some form of collective reflection is shared by all participants during the working sessions and later with the audience at the general discussion moments.

DESVIOS / DETOURS III is the third edition of the international encounters hosted by Transforma in Torres Vedras since 2004 and curated by Gabriela Vaz-Pinheiro. 19th and 20th October 2007.

No dia 17 de Outubro 2007 de manhã organiza-se no Porto o Seminário:
"Nova Geração de Respostas Sociais - O 3º incluído".

"Este seminário propõe-se realizar um exercício de reflexão entre os discursos das Ciências Sociais sobre os fenómenos da exclusão social e as formações discursivas da Arquitectura e do Desenho Urbano. O ponto de partida é a abordagem à Cidade como palco privilegiado para o exercício da cidadania. (...) Conceber uma nova geração de respostas sociais mais não é do que construir lugares habitáveis."

The Rear, The 1st Herzliya Biennial of Contemporary Art, Israel

"The Rear is a term that surfaced repeatedly in Israel during and after the war of last summer. It is perceived in terms of charged dichotomies: the home front in relation to – and as part of – the front line, Israeli civilian society in relation to the army, and aesthetic pleasure in relation to political harms. The Rear ties the distinction between society and the state to the tension between labor and capital.
The exhibition The Rear leads viewers into underground warehouses, storage halls, the city council's taxing basement, a center used for the distribution of gas masks to civilians during the 2003 US invasion to Iraq, the museum's spaces, a center for the elderly, shops, and bomb shelters. On the street itself, the exhibition will extend across sidewalks, squares, façades, and rooftops.
The Rear endeavors to reconsider the public sphere through the various works and their location: an artist pretending to be the president, a statue commemorating the Unknown Draft Dodger, a guillotine in the city square – all situated in the city of Herzliya, which bears the name of Theodor Herzl, the conceiver of Zionism. In this historical moment, characterized by growing privatization and a strong militaristic grip, The Rear offers scrutiny of the public sphere and the citizens within it.
